Braunwald sits at 1256 m on a sun terrace above the Linth valley and has been car-free since 1933. The village is reached by funicular from Linthal.
Summer brings hiking trails, mountain biking and paragliding. Winter brings sledging, winter hiking and cross-country skiing. The Braunwald ski area is closed and is not expected to open next season.
